Accepting donations

Steve needs to fly home for the World Series. Any contributions can be sent to my house in Grosse Pointe. I can pick it up next week. Thanks.
PS - I already downloaded the last ALCS game for the plane-ride.

Steve –

My friend Joanne Gerstner from the News pointed me to your blog. I'm a columnist here ... Where were you when Magglio hit that homer? And how did you find out about it? Hit me with an e-mail at nrubin@detnews.com, and who knows -- we may get you some donations.

Thanks,

Neal Rubin

Stevo,

If anyone can pull off the World Series in Detroit while studying abroad -- it would be you!!! (although I would have to say you learned from the Master -- your Dad!!!)

Ciao,

Uncle Bruin

Steve-

What a year you picked to go overseas!! Not only the Tigs in the Series, but your Wolverines look like they could really make a run at the national title.

The Maggs home run was absolutely scintillating. Hopefully you saw it -- if not, listen to the call from WXYT-- if the link below doesn't work, go to wxyt.com and listen to it. It is awesome.

Going to your bro's soccer game this afternoon, btw...

Hey Steve,

Yeah as Uncle Tom said, bummer year to be gone for both teams. Oh well, I wish we all had it so rough to be overseas. Even though I haven't written I've been keeping up with what's going on with you. I think I would have loved Oktoberfest. Imagine a holiday centered around beer. Anything better? I think not.

Sorry, pretty sure you aren't making it home for the Series {heard rumors that tickets are upwards of $750} Great for the city though. Esp. after the Super Bowl. Miss you and love you bunches, be careful we want you home safe.
love, aunt chris

Stevo,
Mrs. Cornillie wanted me to send you her "newsletter" about the trip to Rome. (See below). Hope all is well with you. Go Tigers!

Amazing trip!! Bud was a real trooper, we were busy! All walking, streets, sidewalks, hills are cobblestones - so tough even for us!! We were on a "Pilgrimage" and Pilgrims are not allowed to complain - 55 in all on a BIG Mercedes bus. We had daily a.m. excursions and again later in day. Mass was a daily ritual at very special locations. We walked (15 min. from hotel) to St. Peter's Square 3 different days. Our first mass was at a side chapel at St. Peter's Basillica. The celebrant was Detroit's retired Cardinal Sczoka. Bud and I did 4 separate excursions and one early a.m. walk on our own - no rest for us!!Kathy & Clark went on 2 with us. Others shopped or rested. We used the "Mary list" so we had great tips. Seeing Mary's "college" John Cabot U in the Trastevere was special. We lunched at her favorite restaurant (of course it was nice). One of our guides teac hes a class there, guides were fabulous. We finished with gelato from Mary's favorite place by Vatican. She had a mega walk to college daily (45-1 hr.) Rosaries are sold everywhere as well as purse people selling knock-offs.
Attended Papal audience, walked over, 2 1/2 hrs. early. We all sat on an end and he drove by right in front of us. Audience is on Wednesdays and some 70,000 were in attendance. Never a cloud during our trip, and temps in the 70's. It is peak tourist time. Msgr. Mike Bugarin (sja, with us whole trip) says it's like he's never seen it. Steve Schrage (Steve's friend) came from N Italy (U of M studying abroad) and dined with us first 2 nites and did St. Paul mass and Colloseum tour etc. Following the Tigers was great fun - stress free due to the 6 hour time difference. We should have sent a go Tiger's sign from St. Peter's Square for channel 4 news! The best game was watching game 2 (tigers 4, NYC 3) at Metro Airport on Bud's bday. Cousin Betty joined the celebration (flying to Atlanta)
We walked early for our Sistine Chapel tour with a superior guide. We walked by several blocks of people lined up and had early admittance. Thus we were not packed in the Sistine Chapel. The Vatican Museum goes forever, 22,000 visitors daily.
We had a glorious trip to the most beautiful mountain town of Assisi.
Bud & I had a burger & beer lunch at Hard Rock Cafe and went to embassy area and Spanish Steps. Saw elite shopping area. You buzz to get in PRADA.
Camp de Fiori is an area of young people's bars atp.m. (yes, Mary went there). Steve Schrage went there with Jason Aubrey ('98 GPN) till 3a.m. to follow the Tiger/NYC game via the internet. Bud and I went there for a Panini and beer lunch. We spent time shopping at the outdoor markets. There were beautiful flower shops, fruit stands, cafes, flea markets..
Piazzo Navaro (in Angels and Demons), Pantheon and Trevi Fountain were happening areas at nite. Dining was all outside and many artists at this site.
Lots of McDonald's and Coke T shirts, hats sold everywhere. That's it for American icons.
Toured North American College in Vatican City State where U.S. priests are educated (a select group). Our SJA priest with us (Msgr.Mike) was schooled there for 5years. Grandma, Grandpa and David were there years ago when a family friend (John Neinstaedt) attended the college.
Our last day we made a midafternoon trip to Orvietto (mt.village) and rode a funnicolare up to the village. All village dates back to the 4th century. Msgr. Mike celebrated the mass in a magnificent church (chapel area) . We had our farewell to Roma dinner in the village. The trip included 3 dinners and 1 lunch, others on our own. We celebrated big after our 7:30 dinner until our 10:30 departure. The Pilgrims let loose, must've been the wine. The Conga Line went throughout the restaurant and upstairs as well. The entertainment consisted of Italian songs. Bud (as usual) was the only male in the line dance/ Clark Stevens (GPYC) was a dancing fool with Sister Carol, tour guide etc. Wait til you see the video. Late ride back- retired at 1:30a.m., up at 5:45 for trip to USA.
SMALL cars (lots of tiny Smart Cars), cycles everywhere, driving wild. Something else! They are parked everywhere - solid. Our bus just missed our freeway exit on the way to the airport - he backed up!!!!
Traveling is greuling. We will be happy o go to FL for R & R.
We will have everybody's photos to choose from plus we will have a video to share. We just wanted to share this info so we didn't have to repeat It was a wonderful opportunity. We really dont's have the travel bug. Rome is the city of all cities, so old, historic and huge.
Bud & Rene

Stevo,

Just got back from game 2 of The Series. Rogers pitched an absolute gem tonight. Gave me chills when the 43,000 people were chanting KEN-NY KEN-NY. Couldn't help but think how much you would have loved it.
I completed quite the intense sports weekend seeing as I attended the North, and UofM football games, then hit up the Pistons game today as well as game 2. So don't worry, I've been watching all of your teams for you. I also visited your girlfriend this weekend. She misses you quite a bit, but seeing me probably got her enough Schrage fill to last til she sees you over Thanksgiving.

Anyway, hope you're havin fun in Italia. Go Tigs.

-Billy

PS - I noticed our brother's post a couple of posts above me. As you can see...he's just as annoying as when you left!
Just kidding...kinda.
